Be My Eyes is new app which allows blind or visually impaired users to request help, live from a volunteer.
A notification is sent to the volunteers mobile device and if they are available to accept the request, then they enter a live video-audio connection with the individual who has asked for assistance. The volunteer can then go on to help with tasks that my only take minutes for them, but will be of incredible benefit to the person asking. Examples of this may be reading instructions on a product, guiding someone through a process or even just reading the expiry date on a food product. With a high volunteer to visually-impaired user ratio, it is said that most calls are answered within 60 seconds.
“Just had my first call and it’s been about 2 weeks after I installed it. So easy. The lady had a box of cheddar potatoes and needed to know what the box was and asked me to read the directions. Other than a few times asking her to move the phone right or left it was very easy and took less than 10 minutes. My grandfather was blind so this helps me give back.
