Can having too many WightFibre Extenders make my Wi-Fi worse?

Yes. More Extenders don’t always mean better Wi-Fi.

If you have more Extenders than your home needs, particularly if they’re positioned too close together, they can create unnecessary wireless congestion. This can result in lower speeds or inconsistent performance even though your device appears to have a strong Wi-Fi signal.

If you already have good Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home, adding another Extender is unlikely to improve it.

Do I need a WightFibre Extender in every room?

No. You don’t need an Extender in every room.

Your WightFibre Hub may already provide good Wi-Fi coverage across much or all of your home. Where additional coverage is needed, your Extenders work together with the Hub to provide Wi-Fi across multiple rooms.

Putting an Extender in every room is generally unnecessary and could introduce additional wireless congestion.

Only use the number of Extenders that your home needs. Adding more equipment doesn’t automatically mean faster or more reliable Wi-Fi.

Does adding more WightFibre Extenders increase my broadband speed?

No. Adding WightFibre Extenders or Pods won’t increase the broadband speed delivered to your home by WightFibre.

Your broadband speed is determined by your package and the connection supplied to your WightFibre Hub. Extenders are designed to improve Wi-Fi coverage in areas where the signal from your Hub or existing Extenders may be weaker.

This means an Extender could improve the Wi-Fi speeds you experience in an area with poor coverage, but it won’t increase the maximum speed of your broadband package.

Adding more Extenders than your home needs can also cause unnecessary wireless congestion.

How far apart should my WightFibre Extenders be?

There’s no single distance that’s right for every home.

Your Extenders need to be close enough to maintain a good connection with the rest of your WightFibre network, while being far enough apart to extend your Wi-Fi coverage into areas that need it.

If they’re too close together, you may not gain much additional coverage. If they’re too far apart, the connection between them may become weaker.

Avoid placing multiple Extenders unnecessarily close together. The best position will depend on the size and layout of your home.

How many WightFibre Extenders do I need in my home?

There’s no set number of Extenders that every home needs. Some homes will get excellent Wi-Fi coverage from the WightFibre Hub alone.

Larger homes or properties with more complicated layouts may benefit from additional Extenders, but adding more doesn’t automatically improve your Wi-Fi. Having more Extenders than you need can sometimes make performance worse.

You can consider adding an additional Extender if your existing equipment isn’t providing enough coverage.

Is it better to connect my WightFibre Extenders using an Ethernet cable?

Where supported, connecting a WightFibre Extender using Ethernet can provide a more stable connection back to your WightFibre Hub. This is known as Ethernet backhaul.

Instead of the Extender communicating with the rest of your network wirelessly, the connection is carried over an Ethernet cable.

This can be useful if you already have Ethernet cabling around your home or where maintaining a reliable wireless connection between equipment is difficult.

Why does my device sometimes connect to a WightFibre Extender that’s further away?

Your phone, tablet, laptop or other device doesn’t always connect to the closest Wi-Fi point.

Your WightFibre Hub and Extenders work together as a mesh network, but your device also plays a part in deciding which Wi-Fi connection it uses.

This means a device may sometimes stay connected to an Extender that’s further away, and that doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.

If a particular device is experiencing a poor connection, try switching Wi-Fi off and back on again on that device to encourage it to reconnect.

What are Plume pods/extenders?

Plume pods/extenders help extend your Wi-Fi coverage around your home.

They work together with your WightFibre provided equipment to help your Wi-Fi reach areas that may be further away from your router.

Where you put your pods/extenders matters. Try to position them where they can still get a good connection rather than placing them directly into an area where you already have little or no Wi-Fi.

If one room has poor Wi-Fi, moving a nearby pod may improve your coverage.

Do I need the Plume Home app?

The Plume Home app can help you manage your home Wi-Fi.

If you’re having trouble using the app, make sure you have the latest version installed and that you’re signing in with the correct details.

Restarting the app or your phone may also help.

My Plume pod/extender is offline

Check that your Plume pod/extender is plugged in and has power.

Try restarting the pod/extender. If you’ve recently moved it, try moving it closer to your router or another working pod/extender.

Your Plume pods/extender need to be close enough to each other to communicate, so moving an offline pod slightly closer may help it reconnect.

If your Plume pod/extender still won’t connect, please contact us.

My Plume app isn’t working

Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the internet and that you’re using the latest version of the Plume app.

Close the app completely and open it again. Make sure you’re signing in using the correct details.

If you’re still having trouble, restart your phone or tablet and try again while you’re connected to your home Wi-Fi.

If your internet is working normally but you still can’t use the app, please contact us.

I need another Plume pod

If you have areas of your home where the Wi-Fi signal is poor, another Plume pod/extender may help.

Before adding another Plume pod/extender, try moving your existing Plume pods/extenders to see if you can improve your coverage.

If you still have areas with poor Wi-Fi, please contact us and we’ll help you look at the options available for your home and package. Please note that additional Pods/Extenders may come at a monthly cost.
