The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce are holding an event to promote and investigate the sustainable future of the Island’s economy, which will in turn inform future economic planning regarding carbon reduction. The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce will bring the community together to promote sustainable thinking at every level, from the workplace to the IW Economic Board.

Speakers and presentations will include:

Chris Hines MBE
Former Sustainability Director at the Eden Project and founder and Director of Surfers Against Sewage. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to the environment and was called as a special advisor to the Rt.Hon Michael Meacher MP Minister for the Environment. During his time at The Eden Project, Chris Hines conceived and managed the Waste Neutral concept. Chris has a deep understanding of the balance between the social, environmental and financial aspects of sustainability.

Dr David Hutchinson, Environment Facilitator at the University of Portsmouth.

Dr David Hutchinson will talk about the work of Greentech South and how sustainability and business can go hand in hand. David will present examples of how Greentech South has promoted sustainability in the south through technology and innovation, along with leveraging inward investment and job creation.
David joined the University of Portsmouth in 2010 to help set up and run the Environment Network which represents the skills and expertise of over 400 academics from across the University that relate to Environment and Sustainability.

Professor AbuBakr S Bahaj, Professor of Sustainable Energy, Southampton University

Professor Bahaj has pioneered sustainable energy research for more than 25 years. AbuBakr Bahaj leads the 55-strong Energy and Climate Change Division at the University of Southampton, where he completed his PhD, progressing from a researcher to a Personal Chair in Sustainable Energy.  In 2012, Prof Bahaj was appointed Chief Scientific Advisor to Southampton City Council-believed to be the first such appointment in the UK and in 2014, the UK’s Science Council named him as one of the UK’s 100 leading practising scientists.

 

The Town Centre Toolkit
As part of the LSTF funded ‘Partnerships with European Success Stories’ project, we will launch a toolkit designed to inspire local communities to progress car-free initiatives in their town centres. We welcome Andre Botermans, from Houten in the Utrecht province of the Netherlands, one of the three locations highlighted in the Town Centre Toolkit. Andre will talk about sustainable transport developments in Houten.

 

Green on Wight will be hosted by BBC News presenter and journalist Nisha Pillai.

Cowes Yacht Haven is a short walk from Red Funnel’s Red Jet terminal. There is no parking at the venue. We are encouraging the use of public transport and will be providing a bus service to and from the Yacht Haven and Cowes Park and Ride.
